These days, everything is vying for our attention. Our immediate surroundings and, debatably equally, the whole world via our technology. Work, family, television, incoming calls, to-do lists, news, music, games, friends, weekend plans, emails, and much more can capture our attention at any given moment. With only so much time, it is important to focus throughout the day on what deserves your focus, and not on what doesn’t. Now, please don’t confuse this with discerning the distinction between want and need. Yes, that is important, but not the whole story.
I’m sure you’ve heard about balance. It’s important to balance priorities, do what needs to be done, and make time for family. Just as important, we must put aside time to care for ourselves, and realize that, sometimes, taking a step back is more important than continually pushing forward.
In short, stop and compare the things that are vying for your attention and determine which of them is more worthy of your time. Now, this will be different for everyone. Everyone has their own unique life experiences, values, and personality that uniquely determine what is ‘right’ for them.
So, ultimately, you are the only one that can truly tell you ‘which is more worthy of your time’.
“Fear, uncertainty and discomfort are your compasses toward growth.” (Unknown)
If you’re afraid, you have a lot to gain by conquering that fear. You do not grow from comfortable experiences, from dwelling in anxiety and not taking action. You grow from doing what you’re afraid to do. In doing so, you will become a better and stronger person who isn’t afraid to stand up for what’s right. Life is hard, fear is real, and, if we’re all honest, hard to overcome. But by putting faith in the universe and risking a leap forward into the unknown, anything is possible.
“Don’t be pushed around by the fears in your mind. Be led by the dreams in your heart.” – Roy T. Bennett
Everyone has fears, insecurities. Part of thinking and decision making and being alive is to carry these fears and insecurities around with us wherever we go. It’s just part of being alive, and is universal. However, though it can be difficult, we always have a choice whether to give in to those fears and insecurities.
Likewise, we always have a choice (though it’s easier said than done) to go about life from a place of hope and love rather than fear. It’s a choice to try to be conscious of every moment of everyday. It won’t always be easy, but it will lead to greater possibilities.
“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” – Martin Luther King Jr.
It is often difficult for people to speak up. Self-doubt starts to enter the mind as one is overcome with negative energy. To not speak up for matters that are important to you is to go about life not truly living. Speak up, dare to be heard and criticized, and don’t let anything or anyone cause you to lose the spring in your step.
