Invention: a new, useful process, machine, improvement, etc., that did not exist previously and that is recognized as the product of some unique intuition or genius, as distinguished from ordinary mechanical skill or craftsmanship. *
The world is constantly changing, for better or worse. We live in an era of unprecedented technological advancement. One consequence of this is failing to consider that the world wasn’t always this way.
Throughout time, there have been particular achievements or inventions that have had a significant impact on the future of an ecosystem, society, or human civilization as a whole.
The computer is an example of such an achievement.
It can be clearly seen how technology has revolutionized and taken over nearly all aspects of human life. If you need to know more about something, you can simply bring up your phone or computer and, with a few clicks, have almost infinite information at your fingertips.
Before the ‘Information Age’ we live in today, and for much of human history, information wasn’t commonplace. As you can imagine, it was much harder to obtain information before the computer came into existence. Rather than ‘Googling something’, one would have to pour through books, get special permission to access archives or the like, or go around town and collect a consensus or first-hand accounts.
The first computer, as you might have heard, can be traced back to WWII as a large, complex device that helped with cryptoanalysis (decoding hidden messages). From that point on, inventors, engineers, and corporations built on that foundation throughout the decades to achieve what you’re reading this on.
Now, the technological achievement itself is profound, but comes with other benefits.
With much improved access to information, consumers and the public are able to know more about the issues going on around them. As an example, citizens are able to know more of what goes on within the government, more about the businesses in their community, and more of how issues important to them are being handled.
Knowing what goes on is an important step of igniting change. Being aware helps us realize that we have a voice and that we can use it. Now that we are aware of the problems prevalent in our society and around the world, we can start demanding change. Demanding change until our voices our heard. With knowledge comes power.
